Hootsuite is a streamlined way to monitor and schedule social media feeds in one tidy place. Users can load the information they want to share, in 15 minute increments, and schedule this content months into the future. This "set and forget" option is not as effective as being live on these social media channels, but it does allow businesses to have activity and visibility on social media without having to feel like they need to babysit their accounts.

Other perks with this tool include the ability to set up "Steams" within Hootsuite to monitor things like Facebook Page activity, Twitter Mentions or retweets and even Direct Messages. These Streams also allow for retweeting and sharing without having to leave Hootsuite. Other uses for Hootsuite include using this tool to follow Twitter parties, posting updates to specific LinkedIn Groups and even posting information to Google+.

A basic account from Hootsuite allows users to monitor and schedule up to three additional social media channels (in addition to your Twitter account, while the Pro version allows for up to 100 (Hootsuite Pro is $9.99/month or £7.99/month).

Even with a time-saving helper like Hootsuite, consistency needs to be your co-pilot as you work to build your social media presence. To build online presence, users need to have a consistent presence and share relevant information to the masses that isn't just all about them. Be sure and practice the "participate, don't push" online rule of thumb (also known as the 80/20 rule) as well. Only 20% of what is being shared should be information about your products, services or business in general. Build relationships now; the selling will come later

Parts of social media are fun and exciting; parts are overwhelming. Find the balance between the two by creating a plan or strategy and utilising a great helper tool like Hootsuite to streamline social media efforts.
