5 Twitter Marketing Tricks You Might Not Know!

Can you remember a time before Twitter? It's hard for me, because it seems as if I've been on there forever. I've operated an online business ever since the Internet became a thing, and started using Twitter in February 2008, just a couple of years after it launched (March 2006). While I didn't make the most use of it back then, I've hung in there. My very first tweet was "I'm opening a Twitter account." Today it's a major part of my social media marketing strategy.

Twitter, in my opinion, is one of the most amazingly powerful marketing tools - ever. Just plain ever.

Think about it. Twitter is wide open, unlike Facebook, which comes with its privacy settings, and other issues (like how it decides your content should be distributed). Twitter allows you to deliver your marketing message 24/7, directly to the people searching for your products and services. (Hello, hashtag!)

But there are several Twitter features many business owners don't seem to be making the most out of. The following are five of my favourite Twitter marketing tips. The good news? You can start using all of them today!

Lists. Yes, lists. Organise the people you follow into Twitter lists so you can keep a close eye on potential clients, past clients, current clients, and so on and so forth. Twitter allows you to organise those you follow into easy to monitor lists. Set up a list for the news accounts you follow, one for your personal interests, one for local points of interest, and of course, those related to business. Keep an eye on prospective clients and past clients, so you can chime in as appropriate! And be sure to watch current clients, too, so you're up to date on their goings on.

Keywords. Use Twitter's search function to keep an eye on phrases your potential clients might be using when they're looking for what you offer! When you use a third-party platform like Hootsuite, you can easily set up streams for keyword phrases, so you can monitor them on a daily basis, and see when people are searching for exactly what you sell.

Schedule posts. Again, another great use for a third-party platform like Hootsuite or whichever app you choose. Use the scheduling feature to be sure you have content going out, even when you're too busy to sit and write those tweets every day! You can also install the Hootlet browser tool to schedule Tweets from within Twitter as long as you have a Hootsuite account - free or paid. Write a few updates when you have a free minute, and then plug them into Twitter. (The only way it gets easier than that is if you hire a team like ours to do that for you.)

Engage. Don't forget to monitor your feeds! Keep an eye on what people are saying and make it a point to reply when appropriate. Be part of the conversation! The more you interact with others on Twitter, the more visibility you will enjoy. Make sure you keep your replies good and short so people can retweet without having to shorten them! (#bonustip)

Monitor Trends. Keep an eye on trending hashtags (you can see those as soon as you log in to Twitter) and find out how you can make one of them relevant to your business. Then, tweet using the trending hashtag! It's a great way to get some extra visibility.
